Two staffers from the Human Rights Campaign recognized Paulk in Mr. P’s, one of the oldest gay bars in the capital. When another HRC staffer showed up with a camera, Paulk left quickly. It was all a misunderstanding, he told NEWSWEEK. “I went in there looking for a bathroom,” he said. “It was poor judgment, [but] that does not mean I am going back to homosexuality.” He could not explain why he chose the dark gay bar over the brightly lit coffee shop across the street. Jubilant gay activists, who consider Paulk as harmful as Dr. Laura, quickly spread word of the sighting via the Internet.
